For more than 30 vintages, some of America’s most revered and elusive wines have been produced carefully, and quietly, in a small winery perched in the hills above Oakville. While some in the Napa Valley relish attention and splash, Dalla Valle has flourished with a graceful and understated confidence, always focused above and beyond on producing exceptional wine from their single, legendary terroir.
In the early 1980’s husband and wife Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle purchased the property, situated on a cherished stripe of red volcanic soil, and began what they didn’t realize would become an iconic Napa story. After Gustav’s passing in 1995, Naoko took full control of the Estate. For more than two decades, backed by an exceptional team, she has overseen all aspects of the business and cemented Dalla Valle’s status through fastidious work in the vineyard and winery. Their daughter Maya, who shares her name with the estate’s flagship cuvée, returned home in 2017 to serve as Director after studying and practicing winemaking at some of France and Italy’s greatest wineries. Maya’s return ensures another generation of success for one of Napa’s great family stories...
To be on this property feels special - its gravitas is undeniable… Dalla Valle does not offer visits, so photographing the estate felt like a unique and important responsibility, requiring a careful eye to capture the spirit of the place and its proprietors. As someone who has admired the story for many years, I have always appreciated what felt like a bit of mystery surrounding Dalla Valle.. I tried hard to share that feeling through my photographs, which documented the entirety of the 2017 growing and harvest season.
